Mod (from modernist) is a subculture that originated in London, England, in the late 1950s and peaked in the early-to-mid 1960s.[1][2][3]

Significant elements of the mod subculture include fashion (often tailor-made suits); music, including African Americansoul, Jamaican ska, British beat music, and R&B; and motor scooters. The original mod scene was also associated withamphetamine-fuelled all-night dancing at clubs.[4] From the mid-to-late 1960s and onwards, the mass media often used the term mod in a wider sense to describe anything that was believed to be popular, fashionable, or modern.

There was a mod revival in the United Kingdom in the late 1970s, which was followed by a mod revival in North America in the early 1980s, particularly in Southern California.[5][6]

They were often thought to be the rivals of the rock scene, or "rockers". These were the two main subcultures that replaced the Teddy Boys of the 1960s.

Prominent mod figures in music include The Who and The Beatles.

'Mod' is short for modernist.

Mod clothing is typified by very bright colors, geometric and color block prints, and short hemlines seen in mini skirts or shift dresses. Miniskirts, developed in 1963 and 1964 and growing ever shorter over the next few years, allowed young women following the mod trends to push the boundaries of tolerance. Men wore tailored suits and button-down shirts with skinny ties. The mod movement has been described as streamlined, narcissistic, and androgynous.
