benefits
Negatives
You could ask the shop owners if they are open in winter and see if they have to take on more staff or change opening hours etc for summer.
you could do a traffic count
you could contact the council and see if they have any information

I know this is mainly coasts but it has good pointers -  http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/geography/coasts/coastal_management_rev4.shtml

and this might give inspiration http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=10&ved=0CHEQFjAJ&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.clydebankhigh.org.uk%2FNew%2520CHS%2520Website%2FFiles%2FGeog%2FHigher%2520Geography%2520course%2FRural%2520Land%2520Resources%2FDorset%2520Coast.ppt&ei=o8JTUNTzJOrK0QWCtID4Cw&usg=AFQjCNGOtMRAU4axpsLIy5n_Nn-dMzBXHA&sig2=zKw6j2bgGzJgG3Pu6S09eQ (will download a powerpoint)
