GCSE Spanish Exam Help! :(

could anyone explain to me when to use 'era' and 'fue'? and whats the difference? because in my controlled assessment i want to write :

1) que era emocionante

and 

2) que fue muy relajante

but which is right?  :((( please help! would mean ALOT! <3

You can use both but not in the same sentence :)

1 because it translates as which was exciting whereas number 2 translates as which it was very relaxing :-)

Fue means 'it was'
