First the intercostal muscles between the ribs contract bringing the ribs up and outwards and the diaphragm flattens. This increases the volume inside the thorax and so decreases pressure. This causes air to rush into the lungs, bringing about ventilation.

It is the exact opposite for exhaling hope that's what you wanted! :)
