"evil and suffering help us appreciate goodness."

struggling with this 6 mark discussion question. need some ideas about for, against and a religious view :) thank you!

already have:

agree - we understand what good is through evil - helps us avoid making the wrong decisions so we can create more goodness

disagree - we haven't experienced world without suffering so we wouldn't know - people in the world have no goodness in their lives so not everyone experiences so they can't appreciate it

religious - we should appreciate everything God has given us but agree with statement.

any more idea please?

Christians believe that there is evil in the world because it is there to test us - God gave us free will so we have the choice to do evil, but it is our responsibility not to give in to the temptation. Some Christians believe that if there was no evil in the world good would not have a true value because you would not have to make a moral decision.

You could always throw in the Harmony theorists analogy that a van gogh up close looks ugly, but from afar it is brilliant. You need bad to appreciate good.
