Microbes can be grown on a large scale using fermenters

Fermenters have features such as an oxgen supply, stirrer to keep microorganisms in suspension and maintain an even temp, water-cooler jacket to remove excess heat and measuring instruments such as pH and temperature gauges

Mycoprotein is produced by allowing the fungus ‘Fusarium’ to grow on sugar syrup in aerobic conditions

Basically you add microbes to a fermenter which ferment any rotten plant material and animal waste that is put in. Oxygen is added for respiration and also the temperature has to be well controlled because we dont want the enzymes denaturing. Carbon dioxide gas is produced as a waste product from respiration. And also methane could be produced if animal waste is added (this can be be used a fuel (biogas)).

Hope this helps :)
