I did this exam 6 months ago so I can't remember all that much, but both use miliatistic language and war imagery.

Manhunt: "And finger and thumb the parachute silk of his punctured lung"
"to a sweating, unexploded mine buried deep in his mind" "the foetus of metal"

Feelings-hurt, damage, weakness, traumatised, the guy's perhaps suffering from post-traumatic disorder from war.

"foetus of metal" -a foetus seems small in a pregnancy scan, just like how tiny a bullet is. However, just like a baby would to its father, this bullet has changed his life forever-except negativel.

Nettles: "I took the (?)-forgotten the word) and honed the blade and went outside and slashed in fury"

"tall recruits" "regiment of spite"

feelings-also hurt, but there is anger too-the protectiveness of a father.

As an introduction, you would use three sentences-the first sentences would be something like "Both poems use militaristic language or war imagery to express feelings of hurt" and then "in Nettles..." and list feelings that are slightly different from the other poem, and "in Manhunt"...the same.

I hope this helped a bit, ask again if you have any more questions?

I'm not sure how your teacher wants you to do it, but this is what I did:

  • Introduction-a lot of figurative language is used in both
  • a paragraph on Manhunt-something about war imagery
  • a paragraph on Nettles-something about war imagery/militaristic language
  • a tiny bridging paragraph to state similarites and differences.
  • a paragraph on manhunt-you can write about rhyming couplets here if you want
  • a paragraph on nettles
  • Conclusion

For each main paragraph we chose a key quoatation to analyse and stuff, I don't know how other people do it.
