Colours- do they help or take up time?

  • 1 vote

I'm using a lot of different colours and 'doodles' to help me revise, but i'm not sure if it's working. I managed to find a suitable technique last year but i can't remember it, so i used brightly coloured words and facts to help.

I end up spending a lot of time on just the appearance of it though (I am a bit of a perfectionist)

Please help- what would be a better technique for me. (I am studying for school exams that start Mon 28th May and last a week)

Thanks :)

Firstly: Good luck within your exams!

Secondly: Your brain has 2 sides, the right and the left. The right side of your brain is used for daydreaming imaginative thinking, colours, drawing and so on. The left side of your brain is used for logic, numbers, lines, and again, and so on! Usually when people revise, they only use their left side of their brain to do the revision, but you are doing is fantastic, because you are using both sides of your brain! You should not worry about your doodles being perfect though! Anyway, it is REALLY hard to stop concentrating on your work when using the whole of brain, as there is not a side that isn't working, to be distracted! This also gets things stuck in your head better! Hope it helped, sorry it was late!

Using colours does help. I have been using colours since i found out that i was dyslexic and found out that it actually works for me as dyselxic people use colours that stand out better for them such as greens or yellows. If you use glasses when reading because the words go fuzzy on white paper it might be that you don't need glases but infact need to get tested for some eye colour thing i'm not sure what it's called but if you have it you can get your exam paper printed in that colour and aslong as you do your revision in that colour your most likely to remember it as it puts you in the same situation as revising as your using the same colour. Psychologists say that you should rewrite out your work are it's more deeply processed than just reading highlighted words or speaking. Maybe you could highlight the key points then rewrite out the key points then try writing what you have learnt in that topic that you just looked at.

Sorry this was late hope it helps.

I tend to use colours and highlighters in my work it really helps. Rather than just using colours for the sake of it perhaps try colour coding things. For example key formulas in one colour, key people in another, key themes in another. This way the colour pop out of the page at you and when you're in your exam you remember those colours and it jogs some sort of image in your mind. Hope that makes sense :)

I like to write somethings in red pen etc., it really doesn't take much time at all to just switch pens. Don't have too many colours though, and I think it's better if you're consistent:

i.e. If you are doing History, say Blue would be for the main info, red for titles, and green for key dates and key people.

personally...even though colours make the page look interesting...they take wayyyy too much time...so if u r looking more for getting notes down instead of presentation...forget the colours...but for some people colours seem to work -shrugs-

Colours always help me. Get some fineliners in bright colours, and write all of the things that are important down with them. BUT... you should also write in bright colours in lesson, when you first learn the stuff, that way, you're taking it in better right from the start. And it's not time wasting as such, because a 20 minute break during revision is good. Maybe do the doodles in your break, because it doesn't require as much thinking, unlike writing, and you can make the doodles as accurate as you want (I know how it is, I'm a total perfectionist!)

That's what works for me. And it is working, but you won't notice, it's more of a subconscious thing.

I love using colours they really help to visualise my work and I remember it because I can imagine the colours within my head. Also I love the hunger games, I read the book 2 years ago and I remember thinking that they should make it into a film. And then they did! Me and my friends are also pretty obsessed with it to! Get bready to crumble!

I personally use colours because your brain remembers it more and plus it makes it attractive so you will want to revise, by doing this I got 2 A*'s and an A in my science mocks !! ;)

Personally I think that COLOURS can DEFINITELY help us to improve the way we Revise. Although some people would believe otherwise- which is fine, and they can do whatever they feel helps them- to me Colours help me to associate related notes, or identify key facts, which its more important that I remember, more easily. Ultimately- just like using CAPITAL LETTERs or making bold a word, or italic or underlining, and so on- we are using different VISUAL STIMULATIONs in order to help us associate or link the image with what we need to remember- and when the brain, in an exam, etc, Searches for the information- I find that remembering the thought process (Visual or otherwise) of 'what colour do I remember writing or typing this word in or how do I remember formatting it- because I formatted this type of information in this certain way?' it really helps- even just that whilst we revise with colours, we make a subconscious 'mental note' of ways in which we can recognise or remember what we are doing, when we are doing it, where we are doing it, what smells were about , what colours we associate with it or what colours we associate with the smells around when i was revising this, or the colours associated with the images that were around whilst doing this..... and so on and so forth. Basically EVERYONE'S DIFFERENT, but our environment and other information that we take in WHILST taking in VITAL INFORMATION allows us to ASSOCIATE and therefore find the VITAL INFORMATION MORE EASILY, when its necessary, because OUR BRAIN HAS MADE THE LINKS and THE MORE LINKS it is allowed to make (in the time it has to make them), THE MORE LINKS / PATHWAYS ARE AVAILABLE; the EASIER we are able to JOURNEY BACK TO THE VITAL INFORMATION that we so wanted to remember.  I think :D :P
