Volcanoes and Gases

  • The Earths surface was origanally Molten for many millions of years. It was so hot that any atmosphere just 'boiled away' into space.
  • Eventually things cooled down and a thin crust formed, but volcanoes kept erupting.
  • The volcanoes gave out lots of gas-including carbon dioxide, water wapour and small amounts of other gases. We think this was how the oceans and the atmosphere were formed.
  • According to this theory, the early atmosphere was probably mostly CO2 with virtually no oxygen. This is quite like the atmosphere of mars and venus today.
  • The oceans formed when the water vapour condensed.
