'last year sasha was paid £15400 after reductions in her gross salary.

she was paid 70% of her gross salary.

this year sasha's gross salary increased by 2%.

Work out the increase in Sasha's gross salary. Give your answer in pounds'

I don't get how you work out what it was to begin with, can anybody help as my exam is this afternoon :)

I think you have to work out her gross salary by dividing 15400 by 0.7 which will give you her salary to start with. You then work out the increase by working out what the 2% is. So you multiply the gross salary (which you have just worked out) by 1.02 then subtract the gross salary from the total when multiplied by 1.02 which would then give you your answer.

Is the first part of the question even relevant? Surely you just need to find 2% of 15400? Or does it mean a 2% increase based on the 70% decrease of last year?
