Can someone explain the central nervous system to me please? I don't understand the order in which pain travels or how it works. Also how do painkillers work? At what part do they intercept the transmission?

The CNS consists of the brain and spinal cord only. The CNS is connected to the body by sensory neurones and motor neurones.

  • Sensory Neurones:

Neurones that carry impuleses from the receptors to CNS. The receptors are the cells that detect a stimulus (A change in the enviroment). Receptors can form part of lager complex organs.

  • The CNS

This coordinates the response by collecting all the information from receptors and then deciding what to do about it.

  • Motor neurones

These are the neurones that carry the impulses from the CNS to effectors

  • Effectors

Your receptors are all your muscles and glands which respond to nervous impulses and bring about a change. Effectors like receptors can also form part of complex organs.

There are two types of effectors

  • Muscle cells - these are what make up muscles
  • Hormone secreting cells - these are found in glands eg Hormone ADH is found in the pituitary gland.

Hope some of this helped in some way! If you need any examples or any other help just ask! (:
