Britain/Russia alliance

Why was Britain reluctant to formalise a defensive alliance with Russia in the 1930s and what was it called?

I think it was called the grand alliance. Not sure why they were reluctant to formalise it though, probably because the Americans were suspicious because the Russians had originally sided with Hitler and because the Russians were communists.
