Breeding domesticated animals?

It says in the AQA spec that we need to know the influence on genetic diversity of selectively breeding high yield strains of plant and domesticated animals?
Does this just mean that animals with favourable characteristics will be bred so like animals like cows, so then these cows with favourable genes will keep being bred so they will survive and soon the cows with unfavourable genes will decrease in frequency because they arent being bred as much?
Thanks for any help :)
My teacher must have left this part of the spec out -_-
