I'm finding it hard to choose 2 poems to compare with eachother, does anyone know any good pairs of poems .e.g. nettles and praise song for my mother because they both have nature and family in it ?? :) Thanks

Urm I personally would compare it to quickdraw

  1. Desperation = Q  = desperate for partner to stop hurtin her. G = despearte for partner to love her
  2. Cracks in relationship/ no improvements = Q = struture as if in a jigsaw (do you get what I mean?). G = 2 pairs of lines = partners stuck together, cant get out of relationship, not going anywhere
  3. Pain of loving someone = Q = 'pellets, bullets, gun, blast etc'. G = 'venemous, serpent, spell' = evil/ violent words  = bad experience in love
  4. Lack of stability = G = 'If' = so many possibilites. Q = landline phone/ mobile phone' = landline is a stable phone, doesnt move, she relises on objects for stability, not on her partner.

Hope this helped and good luck! :)

Personally with nettles i would compare and contrast it with Sister Maude because both poems show family relationships and violence between the couple. Also Nettles could be compared with Hour because it shows both innocence and deception within a relationship. Meanwhile Brothers would also be a good choice as it shows the innocence between the youngest and the breakdown between a relationship

Meanwhile Born Yesterday could simply be compared with Brothers, Nettles & Harmonium since they show family relationships.

I Hope this could help !

I'm going to compare nettles to manhunt, because they both reflect the ideas of war and both use metaphors and personification etc. They also highlight the idea of pain and suffering, and the wife in Manhunt and the father in Nettles both try to ease pain.
I also might compare nettles to harmonium because they are both based on family relationships and more specifically between father and son. They also reflect on the theme of memory and ideas of regret, suffering and the inevitablity of death
hope that helped :)

Might be a bit late now but for anyone doing the exam this year onwards, BBC bitesize has pages on each of the poems. One of the pages in the section is about poems that you could compare it to and why. They also have practise quastions for sopme of them about comparing the poems.

i compare brothers with nettles , because of the family relationships , you could compaare nettles with harmonium because it nettles it is the father talking about his son and in harmonium its the son - simon armitage taking about his father , i love the quote "i being me and he being him "

it really depends on the question you are answering because if it is about feelings then it would be different to structure of the poem

You could compare a poem to any other one in the relationships anthology, this is because it is more interesting to see the differences not the similarities. Obviously you have to state some of the similarities but try not to only talk about the similarities if you want a good grade.

Hope this helps and good luck :)

Search for my tongue by Sujata Bhatt and Presents from my aunts in pakistan by Moniza Alvi they are both about culture and how they find it hard to relate and fit in with both the world they are living in and the heritage they left behind. They are in the AQA Anthology book and are good poems to compare; I have done them myself and have many interesting devices to look at and the structures are cleverly portrayed, hope this helps :)
