advantages/disadvantages of using the different measure of average

this is part of edexcel maths the new spec ,i just don't know what it means by 'different measure of averages'??/----and what are the advantages and disadvantages of using different measure of average?

I think this refers to the mean, mode and median. The mean is good because it gives a relatively accurate average (add all the numbers up and divide by the number of numbers) but if there is a large range it may not be as accurate. The mode is useful for knowing which number comes up most often, but doesnt give an average of all the numbers. The median tells you the middle number of all the numbers, however it doesnt give an accurate averages for sets of numbers such as 1,1,1,2,7,7,8. Hope this helps :s
