Posted: 13-10-12 19:05 by Joanne

im thinking of taking:

1)german

2)biology

3)chemistry

4)maths

* but its still subject to change

Posted: 13-10-12 19:16 by anum

They're really good choices! I'm currently doing biology, chemistry and maths which are all good - a language would be really useful as well so I think they are good A levels to choose :)

Im also in year 11 n i was thinkin of doin chemistry, biology, psychology n i dont kno if to do maths or german...:)

Oh my days, you clever people. I'm in year 11 too and I want to do History at Uni at somewhere like York, Exeter or Durham.

Next year, I'm thinking of taking...

  • History
  • English Lit
  • Psychology
  • Media Studies (for AS)

But I might do another one too because I've read doing Media (a 'soft' option) would damage my chances :( but I have no clue how hard 5 a levels are

I don't know weather it will damage your chances but I'm doing 4 a-levels and I find its a lot of work but if your a hard worker you should be able to cope with 5

I'm currently doing 5 A-levels and it is a LOT of work. Rewarding, but tough.

And I wouldn't worry too much about the 'soft' option, I think the unis will only take those into account if you do more than one of them for A2.

It depends on the kind of person you are - some people manage fine with 5 and other people struggle. What I would say is that I wouldn't think now about what you want to continue with at A2 level because you'll probably find that your opinions change once you've sat exams and had your results. Have you considered taking another essay based subject in addition to history and English? The universities you're aiming at tend to prefer "traditional" subjects, particularly for courses like history which are very over subscribed so you could pick another essay based subject, a science or a language then take psychology and media in addition. In generally, having two "traditional" A levels plus an additional one of something like media or psychology is accepted but in a deadlock situation between you and another applicant (if everything else was considered equal) they may be tempted to go for an applicant with 3 "traditional" choices.

However, at this stage you've got plenty of time to make decisions and you might find that what you think you enjoy now completely changes by the time you get to doing your A levels and after that applying to university. If I look back to when I was 15/16 and in Y11 I thought I'd be doing quite different things to what I've actually ended up doing in life.

You might want to take a look at this booklet written by the Russell Group, which is the group of universities who are the top tier institutions in the UK (so the likes of the London unis, Bristol, Edinburgh, St Andrews, Durham etc) for guidance on choosing A levels.

hey! I want to study medicine at uni

BUT i dont want to go for the generic option of 3 sciences and maths

defo biology and chemistry obviously, maybe physics?

however maths is often thought to be a necessary choice- but i dont know!!

thats kinda my problem too- a language would be great, and i do enjoy german

however that leaves me with either taking 3 sciences and no maths, or 2 sciences and maths

though i dont think i could cope with 3 sciences personally-i've always been weak at physics

In my opinion, a language would be quite awesome, and is very highly regarded by peeps, ltho maths is equally important

hey guys :) I'm in year 12 and I'm doing 5 A levels :) (technically 6 if you count Polish that I'm doing outside school) xD

I'm taking maths, further maths, physics, chemistry and biology.

I'd say it's a lot of work, and you have to keep up with everything. you can't let yourself to fall behind. but i think as long as you really work hard it should't be too hard :) I want to do physics at uni :) to be honest, I find A levels so much more interesting than GCSEs, so I enjoy the work, and I don't feel like it's too much to take on. :)

Natalia hi, totally agree with you, I'm doing english for a level and it is so much more interesting than gcse, I thought it would be the other way around.

Posted: 17-10-12 22:01 by Thegirlwhoknewtoomuch - Team GR

yeah, it's like at gcse you only scratch the surface, and then at a level you go into more depth :)

Posted: 17-10-12 22:04 by Natalia

this sounds wierd but I actually find english easier at a level, maybe it's because i concentrate more now XD

I'm in year 11 and I want to do Medicine at University, I'm not 100% sure on my A-levels but i am thinking...

Biology

Chemistry

Economics

Maths

Has anyone here heard of 'use of maths?' i went to this sixth form and they offered it as a new subject, they said it is the kind of maths u use in everyday life instead of pure maths which is a lot of theory. it is aimed at those students who got a B in maths at GCSE, but in my exam i got an A and im aiming for A* so im not sure which maths to choose....any advice??

i want to get at least A*AA at A-level

Cant really help you much except read different uni prospectusses.

For medecin i know tht quite a few places dont regard the likes of further maths very highly, and some count maths as one of those "and/or" kinda things

just go for it- if it doesnt appeal to you im sure you might be able to drop it at A2

Anyways- good options- if u got an A, give it a try- what'll u lose?
