  • War was declared on August 4th
  • German/English trenches were between 1-10 mile apart
  • Men suffered from shell shock due to the sound of the artillery
  • Gas was used from 1915
    • Weapons
      • Machine guns were a major weapon from the start
      • Both Army's had heavy artillery
      • in 1914 planes were made of paper and wook
        • Their main job was to take photos, pilots were expected to die within 1/4 weeks
    • Chlorine gas had psychological effects
      • Gas masks were 100% effective however the wind often blew the gas in the wrong direction

  • Conscription
    • Many man rushed to volunteer thinking the war would be over by christmas
    • Propaganda was used to persuade people to sign up, it played on emotions such as guilt and patriotism
    • In 1915 the number of voulenteers declined so more propoganda was produced
    • in 1916 conscription was introduced for men between 18-41
    • Men who refused to fight were given white feathers by women to show they were cowards
  • Women in the War
    • Men who refused to fight were given white feathers by women to show they were cowards
    • Because the men were away women joined the womens land army and worked on farms
    • Women made weapons and uniforms in factories
    • Women also served as VAD's
    • In 1916 the women's royal navy service was formed
    • in 1917 the women's auxiliray corps was formed
    • in 1918 the women's royal air force was formed
