- Unit 2 Section B - Sampling Methods and Experiments WJEC 2022
- Sampling Methods
- Random Sampling
- *Random Technique* Every member of the target population has an equal chance of being selected.
- Strengths - No researcher bias. They do not pick the participants. Weakness - May end up being accidentally unrepresentative. - Lowers External Validity
- Volunteer Sampling
- Participants put themselves forward
- Strengths- Time and Cost Effective. Weaknesses - Volunteer Bias - Lowers External Validity
- Opportunity Sampling
- Select People who are available at the time of the study
- Strength - Time and cost effective. Weaknesses-Likely to be unrepresentative. - Lowers External Validity
- Quota Sampling
- Selected according to their frequency in the population. Within each group, participants are chosen by the researcher.
- Strengths - Representative. Improves External Validity. Weaknesses- Researcher Bias
- Stratified Random Sampling
- Selected according to frequency in population. Within each group, paticipants are selected randomly
- Strengths - Representative - Improves External Validity. Weaknesses- Time Consuming and expensive
- Selected according to frequency in population. Within each group, paticipants are selected randomly
- Systematic Sampling
- Every nth Person
- Strengths - Objective System- no Bias. Weaknesses - Accidentally unrepresentative - Lowers external Validity
- Every nth Person
- Snowball Sampling
- Small group of participants who each recruit their own participants
- Strengths - Can access difficult to reach groups. Weaknesses - Not representative - Lowers External Validity
- Small group of participants who each recruit their own participants
