      • Religion: Once the Act of Supremacy was signed, it was seen as an act against the state.

      • Social Changes: Families broke up trying to find work. Left old women who turned to magic.
      • Economic hardship: Crop failures were blamed on witches.
        • 1590-1645 wages and work declined.
    • 1563- Elizabeth 1 witchcraft was broken up into two different sectors.
      • Major witchcraft: trying to bring about death, raise the dead. -Punishable by death.
      • Minor Witchcraft: Magic and charms. Punishable by imprisonment or stocks.
    • Why women?
      • Original Sin
      • Women were seen as morally weaker than men.
      • Misogyny.
