          • The tet offensive 1938
            • over 1,000,000 vietcong killed in 1967- 31st Jan 1968 Tet festival- without warning the nva an vietcong launche attacks throughout the south, on cities and us bases an even the us embassy.
            • over 100 places attacke- saignon- us embassy and other places like main raio station captued-Us and ARVN ended the offensive n 48 hours. Communists didnt get expected support of the people. Over 30,000 vietcong killed.The meia in america, however, shoed the fighting in saignon, thousands of refugees and civilians killed- how could the us be winning this war?
          • Napalm- a chemical bombing that caused severe burning of the skin.
            • 1/2 million children since born with birth defects.
          • My Lai Massacre
            • 16th March 1968- 9 helicopter gunships carrying 3 platoons lane near the village of My Lai for a search and destroy mission.
            • Lt Calley led one platoon-ordered village an those in it to be destroyed. 500 unarmed  men, women and children killed out of 700 inhabitants.
            • 1969- 18 months later, a us soldier gave an account of events on tv. Investigation and photos released. Americian public shocked. Many believe this inhumane behaviour made them no better than their enemy. LT Calley was put on trial in 1970, sentenced to life with hard labour. Release in 1974.
        • Mental tactics used
          • Hearts and Minds tactic- this was where they tried to help the viatamese e.g. they offered the children sweets and helped teach the mothers how to keep their babies cleanr- however this insulted many viatemese due the steeotypical way in which the americians were treating them.
          • They used things like toe-poppers and bouncing betties to embarrass the soldiers and lower their morale.
          • They dressed like vietcong, so made the americians paranoid
          • Dresse like civilians an got into americian camps, so the americians knew they were never safe but ended up killing the wrong people alot of the time.
          • The vietcong had control of the media, so kept morale high by portraying them as winning.
        • Americian intervention-why
          • Japan took over during ww2
            • Vietminh formed. After japan were defeated, vietminh- lead by ho chi minh continued to fight french.
              • 1954- french rule collapsed after Dien Bien Phu, where they severely underestimated the vietamese.
                • Geneva conference 1954- split vietnam along 17th paralell.
                  • Us began to support anti-communist south- domino theory. Economic and military aid provided.
                    • By 1964- they are commited.

        • How america got involved
          • - 1964 newspapers said the us maddox had been attacked by north viatamese patrol boats.
          • Us responded with a bombing  raid to destroy bases- limite action though.
          • President Johnson- " we have to meet agression with action".
          • 1965- vietcong attacked a us base at pleiku
            • Operation rolling thunder-1965- b-52 bombers
