  • Why are women in poverty?
    • Low pay.
      • Patriarchy and the glass ceiling effect in the workplace.
    • More likely to work part-time and take career breaks to raise children.
      • Therefore have low income and find it hard to get back into work.
    • They go without.
      • To provide for their children (eg. food and clothes).
    • High childcare costs.
      • Childcare costs in the UK are the highest in the western world.
      • This with lone parenthood (poverty).
    • Lone parenthood.
      • Only one wage earner and high childcare equals poverty.
    • They may have to be unemployed(LP).
      • To look after children and therefore rely on benefits which are very low.
