  • Why were the Bolsheviks able to overthrow the provisional government in October 1917?
    • Background
      • 1. Social & Political situation between feb-oct, undermined its prov supporters
      • 2. Bolshevik popularity during 1917- able to influence undercut of revolution
      • 3. Bolshevik organisation and strategy took advantage of Urban & Rural resentment
    • Masses influence
      • The War had left society in terrible situations, this influenced them to demand justice from the Bolshevik
      • Nott everyone used the support of the Bolshevik; Peasantry had radical impetus, Peasant petitions, Courts and use of education allowed them pressure the Bolshevik to act on Reform
        • Lenin's April Thesis= promised land ownership, but, the collective Marxist complained as he was corrupting his own system
      • representative support- was greater in April and October 1917 than before. Lenin moved towards concessions in the middle of April Thesis
        • Contracts were made with Left SR, Menshevik internationals. This widened the splits among old revolutionary rivals as they had to obey the commands of the Peasants

    • Coalition Gov- also failed, even though the Kerensky a social Revolutionary with the: compromised Left Mensheviks. supported at first even with their demand of continuing the War 1914
      • Pre-August= Kornilov Revolt- isolated Kerensky from the rest of his Party for still holding on to PG
    • Military- offensive launched against Germany & Austria was s fail, Russian army imminent danger of collapse. Made worse Kornilov top officers took even more damaging action
