  • Why was Weimar Republic so unpopular
    • The treaty of Versailles damaged Germany's economy making the Weimar Republic weak from the start. People blamed the leaders of the republic for signing it. They were labelled "November criminals" because they surrendered in November 1918 and seen as traitors to the country
      • Germans never believed that their army had been defeated in war. Those who criticised treaty felt betrayed by politicians who signed the armistice and "stabbed in the back" when they could have won.
    • The treaty and reparations
      • As the war guilt clause, Germany was was made to accept blame for WW1 and allies said they were entitled to reparations. 6600 million was to be paid in yearly installments to repair damage in their country, especially France which had suffered the most
      • Consequences
        • Army limited to 100,000
        • Navy limited to 6 battleships, 12 destroyers and no submarines
        • All planes were destroyed and no air force was allowed
        • No military was allowed in Rhineland (bordering Germany and France
        • Germany lost 13% of european territory
        • Germany lost 11 of its colonies.
