    • The Great Depression
      • The period after the Wall Street Crash (1929), when lots of countries were suffering economic hardship
      • U.S.A recall their loans/ Dawes Plan in the hope of stablilising their own economy
        • Everyone suffers economic hardship
      • Causes Britain and France to cut military spending in order to stabilise theeconomy
      • Sympathy for Germany comes about
        • Breeding ground for extremism
        • Rise of dictators
        • Europe unprepared for war
    • Russia
      • Nazi-Soviet Pact formed
        • Agreement between Russia and Germany
        • Agreed to divide Poland
        • If one side declares war, the other will stay out of it
        • Germany secures Eastern border; this gives Hitler the confidence to take Poland and risk a 'one front war'.
    • Rise of dictators - Hitler
      • Hitler is very aggressive - war focused
        • Lebensraum - "living space" -extend German borders to have lots of land for 'ethnic Germans' and space for 'non-desirables'
        • Break the Treaty of Versailles; massively unhappy as he believed Germany was never defeated - 'Dolschtoss' - 'Stab-in-the-back theory'

      • Designed to keep peace in the world
        • Some success in the 1920s, but by the 1950s it was dead

          • Not everyone was a member
            • U.S.A
          • Sanctions
            • No collective army
            • Economic fails
          • Britain and France self-interest
          • Proves to Hitler that the League of Nations cannot stops him, which gives him confidence
    • Appeasement
      • The policy of giving someone what they want in the hope that they don't ask for more
        • Britain and France appease Germany
          • Versailles was too harsh
          • This shows they were trying to  buy time to develop military
            • Military was not ready for war
          • Chamberlain believed Hitler would stop
            • Wanted to avoid another WW1
          • Gives Hitler the strength to declare war
            • This also makes him demand more and more

    • Treaty of Verailles
      • Peace treaty given to Germany to signify the end of World War One
        • 28th of June 1919
