            • Jim Bridger was afamous mountain man who assimilated himself with the Indians. He led hundreds of people safely through the rockies & discovered athe Oregon pass which cut the trek by 61 miles
              • Also worked for army until 1865
          • It was the largest economic change in US history
            • Lured by false pretences of earning $1000 a day when in fact they only got $3 so violence broke out hence the name 'Wild West'
              • Taxes were imposed on miners who were not from US this fuelled racial tensions.

          • Man who became a millionaire as a result was Samuel Brennan
            • Made money by owning the only mining supply store. He bought pans for 20 cent and sold for $15.
          • Panning for gold involves scooping up a pan full of gravel & sifting it to find gold which should be at the bottom.
        • Gold was discovered in Cali at Scooters Mill by James W Marshal
    • 1837- banks collapse in East- thousands bankrupt
    • 1839-20,000 unemployed people demonstrate in Philadelphia
    • 1837- wheat prices fall: Mississippi farmers face ruin.
    • 1837- wages in East cut by 40%.
  • 49ers men who became  miners in 1849.
    • 300000 people mainly men came from China, Chile, Peru, Australia, Europe & Latin America
