  • Why are some crimes prioritised
    • Limited resources
      • Will prevent them from using the correct things in order to arrest them
    • The Home Office
      • The have the say on all of the crimes that are prioritised
    • Witnesses/ Evidence
      • The more evidence/ witnesses you have, the more chance you will have catching the offender
    • The amount of victims
      • If there are many victims, the crime will be prioritised in order to receive justice much quicker
    • How many times the crime is reported/ committed
      • People will have concerns if crime is reported more than once, public may lose hope.
    • Severity
      • If a more serious crime e.g murder takes place, they will prioritise violent crimes before petty crimes
    • If other crimes are involved
      • The police will prioritise the crimes committed in order to catch the offender
    • Complexity
      • More complex crimes will be lower down as not many will understand them
    • Media
      • May create a moral panic, the police will need to act fast - public to feel at peace
    • Ripple effect
      • If more than one group are affected, that crime will be prioritsed
    • Anti-social behaviour
      • Could lead on to bigger crimes later on in life - broken windows theory
    • Local population
      • If the local population have a concern, the police must battle it, as it is their job
    • If they are personally affected
      • If police are personally threatened they will prioritise that crime
    • Danger/worry
      • Police have a duty to protect general public - emotions and behaviour can alter that
