  • Why are Christians divided over the big bang and evolution?
    • Creationism and creationists refers to Christians who take the creation stories in the Bible literally and see it as a factual account of the origins of the universe.
      • they reject scientific theories that disagree with what the Bible says- they think science has made a mistake
      • they take the Bible so literally as it's the 'Word of God' - no mistakes
      • they don’t just reject evolution because of the Bible.  They argue that it is a flawed scientific theory.
        • They highlight the gaps in the evidence and conflict between competing scientific theories and argue that there isn’t enough evidence to accept evolution.
      • they don't represent the whole of Christianity
      • They say that mainstream science has misinterpreted the evidence.
        • The actually try to use scientific evidence to prove their ideas and prove the Bible is true.
      • their beliefs might be growing in popularity because they have spent millions on scientific research, all aimed at backing up their version of events.
        • They have also invested millions in science education, as long as their ideas a taught alongside evolution in US schools.
        • They have set up science museums to spread their ideas.
      • some Christians today object to creationism
        • Some Christians actively campaign against them and accuse them of manipulating children by teaching their version of creation in schools.
    • Christians Vs Creationism
      • The Catholic Church says that they make Christians look ignorant because all the evidence suggests that evolution is true.
        • They also say that there is no conflict because the stories in the Bible are symbolic.
        • The Catholic Church funds scientific research and it was a Catholic priest who developed the Big Bang theory.
      • Church of England, says that it is naïve to read the bible in such a literal way.
        • The Church of England also supports modern science and fund research at many top universities.
