  • Who did not benefit from the economic boom of the 1920's?
    • Black People
      • Many black people suffered discrimination from others. This was worsened with the revival of the KKK.
      • They were less likely to be given jobs and often worked as farmers or share-croppers.
    • Farmers
      • New machinery became a more efficient way to obtain crops so many farmers were no longer needed.
      • Because of the new machinery, farmers were making too much food. The prices fell and they received less money.
    • Industrial Workers
      • Similarly with miners, people working in old industries suffered with competition from modern industries.
      • Raw materials, such as cotton, tin and copper, were produced quicker with new machinery.
      • Over production meant lower wages.
    • Miners
      • There were more modern methods used to create electricity so coal was not needed.
      • Many mines were closed and miners' wages were cut.
    • New Immigrants
      • By the time these new immigrants had arrived, most of the jobs had been taken.
      • Many of them could not speak English so had to take any job available. This made them vulnerable to exploitation.
