  • White Writing
    • Stanza 1
      • Line 1
        • "No Vows" suggests that there is not a patriarchal influence and the tradition of love being related to marriage is being challenged
      • Line 2
        • "white" suggests invisible and non-existent meaning they can not write vows. It also suggests purity implying that they see marriage as damaging them. It can also be suggested that they refuse to be damaged by society.
      • Line 3
        • "my" and "yours" suggests that they are combining what they own even if they can not officially or legally do this.
      • Line 4
        • "married years" illustrates how despite not being legal they still class themselves as married
    • Stanza 2
      • Line 1
        • "prayers" creates a link to religious communities which often believe that homosexuality is wrong or against God. This illustrates that the narrator still cares about viewpoints
      • Line 2
        • Repetition of the line creates the illustration of how so much is not possible for them
      • Line 3
        • Metaphor of fire and souls creates an image of being unable to stop their feelings implying that they have stopped trying and have become accepting of themselves
      • Line 4
        • "maiden name" implies that they are free from male oppression as they have their own surnames.
    • Stanza 3
      • Line 1
        • "laws" more referencing to the legal issues of who can marry and who can't illustrating the issues they face
      • Line 2
        • Repetiton
      • Line 3
        • "hand" can be seen as a comforting gesture due to the idea of oppression.
      • Line 4
        • "heartline" illustrates how their love is always present despite not being truly accepted
    • Stanza 4
      • Line 1
        • "guide" may suggest that they are confused bout what is expected but do not get any help with this.
      • Line 2
        • Repetition
      • Line 3
        • "words on the wind" uses alliteration to create a soft sound which suggests that they have a secret that has to be kept to themselves
    • Stanza 5
      • Line 1
        • "written to tell you" seems contradictory as if you tell someone something you don't need to write it this continues the contradictions such as married but not married
      • Line 2
        • Line changes slightly from the other stanzas and "them" is changed to "it". This may be due to being able to misread it as right it suggesting something is not right
      • Line 3
        • "foam" is transient so it is not permanent and will not last suggesting that news does not matter due to their love
      • Line 4
        • The use of enjambment suggests that what they are experiencing is constant and has been going on for a long time.
    • Stanza 6
      • Line 1
        • "last gold sun" suggests that although it is last and suggesting the last happiness the use of gold implies the best that they could want so they are happy
      • Line 2
        • "inked water" implies that although a mark is being made it is not permanent which may relate to Carol Ann Duffy's opinion of her writing
      • Line 3
        • "no poems" a further contradiction as saying no poems written within a poem is a paradox suggesting that society is paradoxical and writing can often seem paradoxical
      • Line 4
        • Ending on the repetition suggests that the repetitive nature of writing and society is important
