  • White blood cells
    • Neutrophils
      • Move around the body (in the blood) to find foreign materials
      • Engulfs and destroys the pathogens
      • Multi-lobed nucleus
        • Allows flexibility- can squeeze through small gaps when travelling
      • Many lysosomes
        • digest pathogens
      • Non-specific immune system
      • Move to infection area through capillary walls
    • Lymphocytes
      • Work on bacterial and viral infections. There are two different types.
        • B-lymphocytes
          • Produce antibodies, some become memory cells
            • Antibodies attach themselves to the pathogens so other cells can recognise that the pathogens need to be destroyed.
          • Each cell watches our for a specific germ/ pathogen.
        • T-lymphocytes
          • Look for cells that are hiding invaders in the body, or cells that are different to the other healthy cells in the body (like cells that could develop into cancer) and kill them
    • Basophils
      • Function in allergic reactions, release histamines
    • Macrophages
      • Biggest type of blood cell. Live in different parts of the body to keep it clean. Some clean up other WBC that are damaged doing their job
    • Protect body against infectious disease in the immune system
    • Made in the bone marrow
    • Have a nucleus, mitochondria, RER and ribosomes
