- When do we use specific graphs?
- Bar chart
- Used for discrete data, columns do not touch, comparing groups of data, categories, used in experiments or obsevations
- Histograms
- Used for continuous data, columns touch, area of the columns show the frequency, requires class boundaries, class width and frequency density
- Frequency density = frequency / class width
- Used for continuous data, columns touch, area of the columns show the frequency, requires class boundaries, class width and frequency density
- Pie Charts
- Used for discrete data, shows relative contribution to overall total, used for 6 categories or lower, useful when data is showing a %, requires data to be presented as an angle
- Line Graphs
- Used for continuous data, comparing 2 or more conditions, looking at changes over time
- Scatter Graphs
- Used for continuous data, measuring the relationship between co-variables, shows positive, negative or no correlation
- Discrete data; the data is in a whole number, e.g. numbers of CD sold
- Continuous data; data that has a value at each point, e.g. length of a journey in miles
- Bar chart
