- 1931- Japan invaded Manchuria
- 1937- Japan at war with China
- China was unstable, with rival political parties falling out with each other, heading to Civil War.
- 1943-US and UK saw China as key ally against Japan
- Stalin agreed to fight Japan if he was given Soviet Sphere of influence in Manchuria. He would get some territorial concessions

- 1905- USSR fought with Japan. USA and Japan wanted control of Pacific Ocean.

- Yalta- Roosevelt needed Stalin to fight Japan, so gave him power.

- 1965- invaded Japan, made a colony. Lots of protests, Koreans stood up against the Japanese
- American's sympathetic. Korea wanted independence. Soviets saw Korea as important, didn't have trade agreements.

- USA and Soviet Union want to see Korea administered in best interest of Korea
- Russia help Korea fight against Japan with USA.
- 1945- Korea split on 38th Parallel. Russia got North Korea, USA get South Korea
- Vietnam
- Since the late 1800s it was a French colony. Vietnamese oppose French rule. During WW2, France fell, so Japan took over Vietnam.
- The US was split- some were critical of French rule.
- After Yalta, FDR spoke of trusteeship for Vietnam. Was happy for France to be in charge of it, provided that 'independence was the ultimate goal'.
- No actual agreements at Potsdam. Truman slightly willing than FDR to allow France to take control of Vietnam after WW2
