  • Weimar republic 1918-1923. Key features & problems
    • Proportional representation.
      • Coalition government forming lots of small parties. Led to disagreements and prevention of laws being passed.

    • Chancellor needed a majority in the Reichstag to pass laws. President could suspend the constitution and pass laws by decree.
    • Attacks from the left wing. The spartacist uprising 1919 6th jan led by Liebknecht and Luxemburg.
      • Wanted to establish a communist state. Defence minister Noske used army & freikorps to stop rebellion. Fighting ended after days. L&L hanged.
    • Attack from the right. Kapp Putsch 13th March 1920. Led by Ehrdhardt and Wolfgang Kapp
      • Ebert announced he was going to reduce army and disband freikorps. Ehrhardt (leader) refused to comply with Wolfgang Kapp. Successfully seized Berlin. Ebert asked people to not support and strike. There wasn't much support for the putsch because trade unionsts and civil servants supported the gov and so it collapsed.
    • Politicians became known as November Criminals for signing the Treaty of Versailles 'doltchoss'
