  • Week 5: Argument Schemes
    • Deductively valid arguments = syllogisms
      • Categorical syllogism e.g. Socrates -> men -> mortal
      • Disjunctive syllogism: e.g. cat either alive or dead -> not dead therefore must be alive
      • Hypothetical syllogism: if it rains -> streets will be wet -> it's raining -> therfore, streets wet.
    • Argumentation scheme
      • Critical questions
        • Expertise Q: How credible is E as an expert source?
        • Field Q: Is E an expert in the field A is in?
        • Opinion Q: What did E assert that implies A?
        • Trustworthiness Q: Is E personally reliable as a source? (not biased, dishonest, etc)?
        • Consistency Q: is A consistent with what other experts assert?
        • Backup Evidence Q: Is E's assertion based on Evidence?
