- The total number of crimes REPORTED and RECORDED by the police. This is a useful snapshot of number of crimes, allows for prevention strategies.
- Strengths
- Allows for prediction and prevention of crime.
- Limitations.
- Not all crimes are included. For example less serious crimes are excluded, so isn't representative
- Underestimate the true extent of crime. As many crimes can go unreported by the victims or not recorded y the police.
- Farrington and Dowds found that police in Nottinghamshire were more likely than other regions to record thefts of under £10- show spike in area.
- Victim Surveys.
- Record people's experience of crime over a specific period.
- Strengths.
- Has high temporal validity, as the survey is updated regularly, meaning it includes relatively new crimes.
- Limitations.
- It uses a self report measure so some may be reluctant to report a crime or may lie.
- Offender surveys.
- Offender surveys involve individuals volunteering details of the number and types of crimes they have committed.
- Strengths.
- Useful - Asking offenders about the offences they have committed, help in prevention.
- Limitations: Self report method.
