  • Ways of Measuring Crime.
    • Official Statistics.
      • The total number of crimes REPORTED and RECORDED by the police. This is a useful snapshot of number of crimes, allows for prevention strategies.
      • Strengths
        • Allows for prediction and prevention of crime.
      • Limitations.
        • Not all crimes are included. For example less serious crimes are excluded, so isn't representative
        • Underestimate the true extent of crime. As many crimes can go unreported by the victims or not recorded y the police.
        • Farrington and Dowds found that police in Nottinghamshire were more likely than other regions to record thefts of under £10- show spike in area.
    • Victim Surveys.
      • Record people's experience of crime over a specific period.
      • Strengths.
        • Has high temporal validity, as the survey is updated regularly, meaning it includes relatively new crimes.
      • Limitations.
        • It uses a self report measure so some may be reluctant to report a crime or may lie.
    • Offender surveys.
      • Offender surveys involve individuals volunteering details of the number and types of crimes they have committed.
      • Strengths.
        • Useful - Asking offenders about the offences they have committed, help in prevention.
      • Limitations: Self report method.
