- Global Hydrolical Cycle
- Explains the distribution of water as it moves as either a liquid solid or gas between the ocean, the atmosphere and the land
- Total amount of water in the cycle is always the same as no water is added or lost
- This is an example of a closed system
- Ten components
- Evaporation - when water is heated by the sun and rises into the sky as water vapour
- Condensation - when water vapour is cooled and turns into water droplets to form clouds
- Precipitation - all water released from clouds such as rain, hail, sleet and snow
- Interception - when trees or man made objects get in the way of rain reaching the ground surface
- Infiltration - when water soaks into the soil
- Percolation - the downward movement of water from the soil into rock
- Surface run off - water flowing across the surface of the land, whether in a channel or over the land
- Through flow - when water travels through the soil towards a river or the sea
- Transpiration - when moisture from plants and leaves is lost to the atmosphere
- Ground water flow - the movement of water through rocks
