- What are Water Aids aims?
- Clean water - the access to clean, safe water. Prevents spread of disease and leads to a happier and healthier population.
- Sanitation - good sanitation means better public health. This means there is less chance of spread of disease.
- Hygiene Education - People are taught how to prevent disease and what causes it. This means the population are more likely to build a healthier, disease free community.
- What are the problems Mali are facing?
- One in every five children die before their fifth birthday. Mostly caused by HIV and Chorlera.
- 4 million people are without clean water.
- 2/5 of Mali is desert, where there is lack of rainfall.
- People have to walk from 5km to 9km to gather water. This comsumes their day, reducing the amount of women in work and children in education.
- 63.8% of the population is classified as poor.
- What have Water Aid done?
- They build water pumps in urban areas and deepend and widened wells in rural areas.
- They've introduced soap making schemes where they make, premote and sell soap.
- They've taught people how to keep and maintain sanitaion facilities.
- What impacts has it had on Mali?
- 205,000 have access to clean water. 208,000 have good sanitaion.
- More women can go to work and children have more time to go to school as they no longer need to walk a long distance to collect water. This means the economy deveops as more people work and a better education means better jobs.
- By selling and premoting soap, it provides jobs and money for the local economy.
