  • Variety of Living Organisms
    • Plants
      • Multicellular organisms.
      • Cells contain chloroplasts.
      • Cells are able to carry out photosynthesis.
      • Cells have cellulose cell walls. (as well as cell membrane.)
      • Store carbohydrates as starch or sucrose.
      • Eg. maize, peas, fern.
    • Animals
      • Multicellular organisms.
      • Cells do not contain chloroplasts.
      • Cells are not able to carry out photosynthesis.
      • Cells have no cell walls.
      • Have a nervous system.
      • Able to move from one place to another.
      • Often store  carbohydrate as glycogen.
      • Eg. humans, insects, worms.
    • Fungi
      • Feed by excreting digestive       enzymes onto food & absorbing the digested        products.
      • Cells do not contain chloroplasts.
      • Cells are not able to carry out photosynthesis.
      • Cells are joined together to form threads, called hyphae, which contain many nuclei.
      • Cell walls are made from chitin. (a protein).
      • Store carbohydrates as glycogen.
      • Eg. moulds, yeast.
    • Bacteria
      • Microscopic single-celled organisms.
      • Cells do not contain a proper nucleus. (instead they have a circular chromosome of DNA.)
      • Some carry out photosynthesis, but most feed off other living or dead organisms.
      • Eg. Lactobacillus, Pneumococcus.
    • Protoctists
      • Microscopic single-celled organisms.
      • Some have features like an animal cell, some like a plant cell.
      • Eg. protozoa, algae.
    • Viruses
      • Small particles, smaller than bacteria.
      • Not made from cells.
      • Parasitic, and reproduce inside host cells.
      • Consist of a protein coat surrounding genetic info either in the form of DNA or RNA.
      • Infect every type of living cell.
      • Eg. Influenza.
