- they involve injecting small amounts of dead or inactive pathogens into the body
- these pathogens have antigens on their surface
- the antigens cause your white blood cells to produce antibodies to attack the pathogens
- if your infected with the same pathogen later, your white blood cells quickly produces lots of antibodies
- these antibodies kill the pathogen so you dont become ill
