  • Useful Energy
    • A machine is something that transfers energy
      • One place to another
      • One form to another
    • Energy we get out of a machine comes in two forms
      • Useful energy
        • Transferred to the place we want in the form we want
      • Wasted energy
        • Not usefully transferred
    • Both useful and wasted energy will eventually be transferred to the surroundings
      • Cause surroundings to heat up
      • As energy spreads it is harder to use for further energy transfers
    • Energy is often wasted because of friction between moving parts of a machine
    • Some friction can be useful e.g. in brakes of a bicycle
      • Some kinetic energy of a vehicle is transferred to energy heating the brakes
