  • Use of language
    • Blood appears as a real substance all through the play, it is used a number of times as a symbol of the guilt that runs through the play.
      • 'Will all great Neptune's ocean wash this blood / Clean from my hand?'     'It will have blood  they say: blood will have blood.'    'I am in blood / Stepp'd in so far.'
    • night time is traditionally associated with evil, many of the most horrifying scenes take place at night, it is also used to show the darkness of feelings and the evil of what people are doing.
      • 'Come, thick        night'        dark night strangles the  travelling lamp.' I must become a borrower of the night / For a dark hour, or twain.'
    • References to time are key aspect of Macbeth, as time passes in the play, events become more intense and consequences more significant.
    • 'to beguile the time, / look like the time'  'Hath nature that in time will venom breed'
