- US election campaign cost lots of $$ because...
- big country, travel costs!!
- campaign last 9 weeks, need to fill up the time doing cool things for your campaign
- tv coverage is pricey! - even if they get free tv like daily show they still have to pay for travel, makeup, wardrobe, staff etc
- sitting presidents have an advantage as they can go on tv any time
- staff salaries
- 2008 - both candidates together spent 3bn$
- 2012 - candidates spent about 1bn$ each and outside groups spent an additional 4bn$
- 2016 - just over 1bn was raised by Clinton's campaign and just under 1bn was raised by Trump's campaign
