- In 2008 pop. was 141,000.
- In 2016 pop. was 160,000.
- Has a pop. density twice of Paris with 21,000 people per km
- From 1999 to 2001 pop. grew by 16%
- Causes:
- Rural to urban migration and natural increase (all slowing down)
- It's an agriculture centre - grows cotton and coffee. It attracts business and is seen as a place to earn money.
- People are attracted to the temperate climate due to the relative elevation. This means much less spread of infectious diseases.
- Effects:
- 25% of Brazil's cars are in Sao Paulo.
- There are 7 million cars in the city.
- Heliopolis 100,000 people and growing live in favelas.
- High levels of homicide - in 1999 there were 11,500 homicides.
- 70% of Sao Paulo are favelas.
- 250 km is the longest traffic jam - on average people spend 2 hours in a jam every journey.
