    • What is urban regeneration and what does it aim to achieve?
      • The process of partnership schemes which involves councils and businesses trying to improve a local urban area
      • These schemes mainly aim to improve the local economy along with social aspects as well as the environment
    • Problems with Hulme, Manchester
      • Since the 19th century they have had problems with overcrowding resulting in many living in social housing which was poorly built
      • New tower blocks and buildings were dirty, cold and isolated areas leaving residence feeling depressed compared to there old communities
      • Many people were moving out of Hulme due to unpleasant housing, crime and unemploy-ment
      • How were the problems solved?
        • Old tower blocks were demolished and replaced by a variety of new private and council houses
        • The main shopping centre was refurbished
        • A business park was built at Birley Field to encourage private investment
        • Hulme park was created to provide a safe, open and green area for locals
        • The Zion Centre was created, an arts venue and community centre
    • The process of regrenoration
      • In 1992 the Hulme city challenge partnership began regenerating the area
      • Manchester city council worked with private companies to design a 37.5 million regeneration package
      • Aim
        • The plan was to create a strong community feel by building a mixture of houses, businesses, shops and community spaces hoping to improve transport links with surrounding communities
    • Effects of regeneration
      • Positive
        • Its population grew by 3.2% between 1992 and 2002
        • Frome 1997 to 2002 Hulme received 400million in investment
        • More jobs were created
        • Unemploy-ment went from 32% to 6% in 20 years
      • Negative
        • House prices rose pushing the locals out so they could not afford to stay there.
        • Many still live in social housing
        • Unemploy-ment is still high compared to the rest of Manchester
