- A soul is the spiritual and eternal part of a living being. It is separate from the body which is material

- Dualist - we have 2 separate elements a body and a soul
- Considered the soul had the essence of a person - how we decide to behave
- For plato the soul consists of logos MIND thymos EMOTION and eros DESIRE
- Analogy of the difference between physical pain and crying due to it
- this emphasised the distinction between the spiritual soul and the material body
- the idea that things decay like plants and animals growing and dying - nothing material is permanent and if perminance cant be found in the visible/material world then it exists in the realm of the spiritual
- simple substance cant be destroyed as it cant be broken into bits
- backed up with the theory of the forms to prevent criticism of the work - like where the soul came from
- influenced by Pythagorean whom believed peoples souls moved from body to body despie the actual body dying
- this emphasised the distinction between the spiritual soul and the material body
- 'the soul is in the very likeness of the divine; and immortal and unchangeable and indissoluble; and the body is mortal, dissoluble and changeable
- sould is pre-existant and immortal
