  • Unit One
    • fundamental ideas
      • Periodic table groups contain elements with similar properties
      • Protons and neutrons are in the nucleus while electrons are on the outer shell
        • The number of electrons is equal to the number of atoms
          • The atomic number= how many protons there are
            • Protons + Neutrons = mass number
      • Covalent bonding is when partcles are shared, while ionic is when particles are given away
        • All elements want a full outer shell
        • Ionic only happens in metals
    • Limestone
      • Made of Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3)
        • Thermally decomposed to form calcium oxide and CO2
          • When Calcium oxide reacts with water it becomes slaked lime; neutralises alkali soil
      • Can never run out
      • Damaged by acid rain
      • When CO2 is bubbled through limewater it goes cloudy
      • heated with clay to make cement
    • Metals
    • Crude Oil
    • Useful Substances from Crude Oil
    • Plant Oils
    • Earth + Atmosphere
