  • Unit 5: the medias
  • La loi sur la liberté de la presse de 1881 is the foundation of freedom of the press and of speech in France.
  • I think there should be a limit to freedom of speech because there are people who use it to hurt others by making racist, sexist or homophobic comments.
  • Freedom of Speech began as a way to stop repression of political beliefs.
  • In Equatorial Guinea there is strict media censorship as you may be killed or imprisoned for speaking against the President, Theodora Obiang Nguema, or his security forces.
  • Satirical publications such as Charlie Hebdo, have been targets of attacks due to public belief of offensive content.
  • You could say that French written press is in decline - as according to Statista, 69% of French read their news online.
  • However, French newspapers like Le Monde et Le Figaro have adapted and replaced online - saving both the paper and the newspaper.
  • The online press saves paper and time for French. However, I believe that the written press [subjunctive] is better as it is more accessible, and less overwhelming.
  • What is your opinion?
  • Using Twitter is popular among politicians as it allows them to reach a larger public during campaigns.
  • The electorate enjoy using Twitter to pose questions to the politician in a more personal way.
  • Twitter was especially popular during the French 2012 election.
  • The French press have been reluctant to release the private lives of politicians and the citizens have been respectful of this.
  • However, a notable exception was when former president had an affair with an actress and the French were very interested.
  • The law does prohibit sources who incite hatred or violence.
