- Unit 4: music
- La loi Toubon of 1994 means radio stations are obligated to play 40% French songs. It was created to protect the French language.
- This causes problems for French radio stations because modern French singers prefer to sing in English, so stations fill their quota with old music.
- Angèle, a 24 year old singer from Belgium who sang Balance Ton Quoi, as part of the MeToo movement in France.
- Modern singers who sing in French are at an advantage as they will gain popularity as radio stations will play their music to fill the quota.
- However they are at a disadvantage as this means they cannot compete with international musicians.
- Music is very important to young people as it inspires positive emotions. According to Statista, only 10% of young French people believe they can live without music.
- French music is often used in shops or in adverts to influence the mood and behaviour of the consumer. Even in the UK, "je ne regrette rien" by Edith Piaf was used in the Galaxy chocolate advert.
- French music is becoming more and more multicultural with the influence of immigration in France. There are many immigrants contributing to French music, for example, Charles Aznavour, whose parents were immigrants from Armenia.
- French youth prefer pop music (i.e Stromae and Christine and the Queens) but still enjoy chanson francaise, which is a favourite across the ages.
- Young people are listening to more diverse music because they can, with the introduction of streaming services like Spotify.
- Culture and life experience reflects heavily in Francophone music.
- What is your opinion?
- For example, Haitian music combines French, African and Caribbean influences within music such as Kompa and Rara.
