  • Types of memory
    • The importance of memory size - having more memory means applications run faster on their own, more applications can run at the same time, can more quickly between applications.
      • Units of memory and storage - the amount of data and commands the computer can store is measured in bytes. One byte contains 8 bits(a bit is a binary digit 0 or 1). As ingle character can be stored in one byte (really small unit of storage)
      • Why you need to know about file sizes - bit(a binary digit 0 or 1), byte(a group of 8 bits), kilobyte(a unit of file or memory size that is 1024b), megabyte(a unit of file or memory that is 1024kb), gigabyte(a unit of file or memory that is 1024mb), terabyte(a unit of file or memory that is 1024gb).
      • The demands made on memory by modern software - modern sofrware demands a lot from computer hardware. it is constantly driving the specification of a normal computer higher, meaning that computers need more powerful processors and as programs are more complex, more memory is needed.
    • Use of memory in computers and mobiles - devices that use microprocessors to control it will have some memory. computers and mobiles have memory. desktops, laptops and netbooks have a lot of memory.
    • mobile phones store programs to control the phone etc. PDAs and Palmtops store programmes eg operating systems.
