  • types of variable
    • extraneous variables
      • variables which are likely to affect research and the findings leading to conclusion having pooer validity
      • iv is what research is interested in but these variables get in the way and researcher need to consider them
      • hopefully these are identified early in the research process and can be eliminated
    • confounding variables
      • this ia an uncontrolled extraneous which can systematcally influence the dv
      • example: researcher wants to assess the influence if silence/noise on the quality of homeworked produced
        • 1) h/w done with music 2) h/w done in silence
        • extraneous variables: age, hw, tasks, etc
    • demnad characteristics
      • participant acts differently due to gussing what the research is about or due to anixety becasue they're being observed
        • this can be on purpose or unconsciously
    • operationalisation
      • before researchers ask questions they need to agree on the definitions
        • 'too much' or 'too little' can be different for everyone
    • investiagtor effects
      • researcher involves the interaction between the participant and psychologist
        • psycholgist may act differently toward cetain participants (unconscious bias)
          • (smile more, use leading questions)
    • randomisation
      • this is an attempt to remove researcher bias or investigator effects
        • to counteract the researchers bias , the researcher will randomly give numbers to participants and pick them randomly
    • standradisation
      • this idea is that the experiment should feel like the same experience for every participant
        • if there is not standradisation  int hese terms then it is very easy for the experiment to get out of control and for the measurments to be incorrect
